Macbook Air: To buy or not to buy?

I’ve been in the market for a new laptop and was eagerly awaiting MacWorld 2008 after hearing the ultraportable rumors in November. While being completely blown away by the innovation and bold decisions that Apple makes with each new product release, I’m beginning to think this isn’t a purchase I’m going to make.
The Mackbook Air a great satellite computer and perfect for road warriors but do I really need that portability and form factor at the expense of speed and space? Kudos Jobs—this is the direction that laptops will move in but for now the Mackbook/Pro is pretty darn good for my needs. Don’t mistake me for being disgruntled by the product; maybe I being the guy that keeps waiting for the next update… and then the next, or can I still see value in my current setup? I might change my mind when display pieces begin hitting Apple stores in a week, but for now I’m sticking with my 17″ Powerbook G4… has it been 3 years already?!!
Would love to hear your thoughts and buying recommendations for the MB Air.

[...] I became one of the people who bought Macbook Pro on the day Apple had introduced Macbook Air. This guy is making a kind of same decision with me from same point of view. Yeah, we don’t need that [...]

A jump possibly too far in to the future.

I would love to get one but I just got a Macbook. I feel that this is the direction all of Apples laptops will be headed eventually. Nice blog, peace.

I fell in love with this when I first saw the keynote, but than I had thoughts. Damn thoughts.
I hear now that USB ethernet adapters don’t fit in the tiny USB port on it.
The battery is not replaceable, so it’s basically a large iPod.
But, I agree. In a few years most laptops, not just Apple’s, will go in this direction. We’re already seeing it with Fujitsu’ Lifebook and the new ASUS lappie that are trying to outdo Apple in thinness and portability.

Man, I hope that this isn’t the direction things are headed in. No optical drive = no software. You have to either download it (prohibitive, slow, hard to find legally) or buy an external drive, which completely defeats the purpose. And no Ethernet? How the heck am I supposed to connect to my Office’s high-speed network? And, worst of all, only 1 USB port. Even my ancient Windows NT computer has 2.
I was hoping for a small Apple laptop similar to the 12″ PowerBook; it’s tiny, lightweight and still has full functionality. This looks more like an overpriced toy for trendy Metrosexuals.
